SpaceX’s entry in the Philippines is a first in Southeast Asia The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced that the business magnate and Tesla CEO Elon Musk may soon enter the country with the Philippines' new law that allows 100% foreign ownership of key industries on Thursday (March 31). Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX would allow the nation to access its low earth orbit satellite (LEO) constellation Starlink that would soon provide broadband internet connectivity even in the most remote islands. Starlink has over 2,000 operational satellites in orbit and is expected to expand to 40,000 LEOs in the near future. SpaceX’s entry in the Philippines would be a first in Southeast Asia. It would also establish a local Philippine entity as a wholly-owned subsidiary. DTI stated that the company's applications and registration formalities are being processed as well as the selection of the company’s gateway locations. Ramon Lopez, Philippine Trade Secretary explained that Starlink’s system would be able to augment and complement existing broadband capacities that would greatly aid micro, small, and medium enterprises as well as online learning, e-commerce, and fintech. With the new law that allows full foreign ownership in key industries such as telecoms, competition in the Philippine’s growing consumer base will be encouraged and corner more foreign investments.
