Dubai-based airline cites lesser demand for reducing number of flights

  DUBAI – Because of lesser demand as a result of travel restrictions and a ban on electronics on US-bound flights, Emirates will reduce the number of flights to certain cities in America starting next month. In a statement issued yesterday, the Dubai-based airline said it would be cutting flights to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Seattle, Boston and Los Angeles. Emirates currently flies to 12 US cities. Twice-daily flights to Seattle, Boston and Los Angeles will be cut to once a day while daily flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando will become five times a week. As a result, Emirates will add more flights instead to other destinations in its global network. "The recent actions taken by the US government relating to the issuance of entry visas, heightened security vetting and restrictions on electronic devices in aircraft cabins, have had a direct impact on consumer interest and demand for air travel into the US. Over the past three months, we have seen a significant deterioration in the booking profiles on all our US routes, across all travel segments," the airline's statement said. Emirates said it will "closely monitor" the situation with the "view to reinstate and grow" its affected US operations as soon as viable. President Donald Trump earlier issued an order barring citizens of Muslim-dominated countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region from traveling to the US for security reasons. Federal courts however have issued temporary restraining orders on Trump's directive.
