Emirates denies staff suicides in Dubai after layoffs

DUBAI - Emirates airline has denied rumours that five of its employees have committed suicide in Dubai. Rumours began circulating on Thursday that five Emirates staff members have committed suicide in Silicon Oasis. The rumours surfaced after Emirates this week announced a second round of job cuts that reportedly affected 700 crewmembers and hundreds of pilots. On Twitter, Emirates responded to a post from a user called Travis on the alleged suicides as “consequences of their action”. "We can confirm that the news is untrue and request not to spread rumours," Emirates responded to the Twitter user.

Emirates job cuts continue

Earlier this week, Emirates announced it was laying off more people “given the significant impact that the pandemic has had on our business”. A source told Expatmedia.net that termination emails were sent out on Wednesday. The job cuts this week follow a previous round of lay offs announced on May 31. In its recent email to staff, Emirates said: “We have endeavored to sustain the current family as is but have come to the conclusion that we unfortunately have to say goodbye to a few of the wonderful people worked with us.” “As previously communicated, we at Emirates have been doing everything possible to retain the talented people make up our workforce for as long as we can. However, given the significant impact that the pandemic has had on our business, we simply cannot sustain excess resources and have to right size our workforce in line with our reduced operations,” Emirates said. https://www.expatmedia.net/emirates-job-cuts-continue-700-crew-affected/2020/06/ to another, equally false post, three staff - a pilot and two cabin crew members - have taken the extreme step. The airline has begun laying off employees to reduce cost and save cash as the carrier looks to rightsize its workforce. "We at Emirates have been doing everything possible to retain the talented people that make up our workforce for as long as we can. However, given the significant impact that the pandemic has had on our business, we simply cannot sustain excess resources and have to rightsize our workforce in line with our reduced operations. After reviewing all scenarios and options, we deeply regret that we have to let some of our people go," the spokesperson said in the statement earlier this week. ICA/Expat Media
