Dubai-based Emirates has completed the first installation of SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi system on one of its Airbus A380 aircraft, marking a major upgrade in inflight internet connectivity for passengers. The airline said the newly upgraded aircraft has returned to Dubai after installation and certification in Newquay, United Kingdom, becoming the first Emirates A380 fitted with the next-generation broadband system. More Airbus A380 aircraft are scheduled for accelerated upgrades throughout 2026 as Emirates expands the rollout across its fleet. Starlink is a satellite internet network operated by SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk. The system uses thousands of low-Earth orbit satellites to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband around the world, including in remote and hard-to-reach areas. The new system represents a major leap from older onboard internet services. The Airbus A380 was among the first commercial aircraft to offer inflight internet, but earlier systems delivered speeds of less than 1 Mbps. With the Starlink upgrade, connectivity capacity increases by up to a thousand times, allowing passengers to enjoy what Emirates described as a “better than at home” internet experience while flying at 40,000 feet. The upgraded A380 is fitted with three Starlink antennas to support the aircraft’s double-decker structure and large passenger capacity. The system delivers more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth, significantly improving browsing, messaging, streaming and overall online access for travellers. Compared to the Boeing 777, the A380 requires additional wireless access points and a third antenna to handle the higher number of passengers onboard. The service will be offered free of charge to all passengers across all cabin classes, with easy access during the flight. Future upgrades are expected to include live television streaming using Starlink, first on personal devices and later on seatback entertainment screens. Emirates said Starlink installations will soon begin at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai to speed up deployment across the airline’s fleet. So far, 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft have already been equipped with the system, with more than 650,000 passengers having used the upgraded service. The Wi-Fi rollout is part of Emirates’ wider investment in passenger experience and aircraft modernisation. The airline’s large retrofit programme has already refurbished 93 aircraft with upgraded cabins, interiors and inflight systems, alongside access to more than 6,500 entertainment channels. In 2025, Emirates also opened its $8 million Centre of Hospitality Excellence to train 25,000 cabin crew members, supporting improvements in service quality across its operations. The latest Starlink installation strengthens Emirates’ position as one of the world’s most connected airlines, offering faster and more reliable digital experiences for travellers.
