Both Dubai-based carriers will integrate services but still managed independently

  DUBAI – Emirates and its sister airline flydubai have entered into an "extensive partnership" that will involve integration of its flight schedules and collaboration on services to benefit passengers. Both companies however will still be managed independently, Emirates said in a statement. Emirates said the partnership will see the two sister carriers "collaborate on networks and coordinate schedules to offer passengers greater connectivity between the two" for "greater city pairing options and help to feed traffic to both airlines' respective networks." The partnership will also result in an integration between the airlines' existing hubs at Dubai International Airport (DXB). Emirates' base of operations is at Terminal 3 while flydubai operates from DXB's Terminal 2. Emirates group chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum expressed excitement over the partnership. "This is an exciting and significant development for Emirates, flydubai, and Dubai aviation. Both airlines have grown independently and successfully over the years and this new partnership will unlock the immense value that the complementary models of both companies can bring to consumers, each airline and to Dubai," said Al Maktoum, who is also chairman of flydubai. Emirates and flydubai are owned by Investment Corporation of Dubai. With the partnership, Emirates and flydubai's combined network would serve 216 destinations, which will increase to 240 destinations by 2022 when the combined fleet will have 380 aircraft. Currently, Emirates flies to 157 destinations (including 16 cargo-only points) with a fleet of 259 widebody planes. Flydubai has 58 narrow-body Boeing 737 aircraft that fly to 95 destinations. Reports said the combined air network expects the first code sharing agreements to be implemented in the final quarter of the year.
