Emirati who bought Dh238,000 Aston Martin with bounced cheque ordered to pay

  DUBAI – An Emirati man who bought a Dh238,000 Aston Martin Vantage with a dud cheque has been ordered by the Al Ain Court to pay the full sum to the British car owner. During the hearing at Al Ain Court, the Briton’s lawyer said that the Briton agreed to sell the luxury car to the Emirati last August. “He handed him a cheque for Dh238,000 following which my trusting client approved registering the car in the buyer’s name,” said Awatif Mohammed from Al Rowad Advocates. The lawyer said that when the Briton went to cash the cheque at First Gulf Bank, he was informed that it bounced due to insufficient funds. The Briton had contacted the buyer about the issue and had made repeated attempts to get the Emirati to pay the amount, the lawyer said. The Briton then filed a report against the Emirati. In court, the Emirati denied issuing a cheque to the Briton, saying that he paid in cash instead. He also claimed to regularly buy and sell vehicles. “I do not know how he got the cheque but I didn’t give it to him. I paid him Dh285,000 in cash,” the Emirati told the court. The Briton’s lawyer, however, argued that the Emirati does not have any receipt of his alleged cash payment. The Al Ain Court ruled that the Emirati pay Dh238,000 to the Briton and that he will retain ownership of the vehicle.
