Emirati convicted of aiding Al Qaida dies in hospital
DUBAI – An Emirati woman who was convicted of aiding Al Qaida has died in a hospital in Abu Dhabi, prosecution officials said.
She died of breast cancer on May 4, said Ahmed Abdullah Al Hammadi, spokesperson for the UAE Public Prosecution.
Alia Abdul Noor was arrested in 2015 and convicted in 2017 of aiding and promoting a terrorist group. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
However, she developed breast cancer after her conviction in February, 2017 and was transferred to the jail hospital for treatment, said Al Hammadi.
Al Hammadi said that Abdul Noor had refused treatment and "also went on hunger strikes on occasions".
She was then transferred to Mafraq Hospital in August, 2017 and later to Tawam hospital where her condition gradually worsened.
