Emirati donates Dh506,053 to free people jailed for debt in Dubai

  DUBAI – Dubai inmates jailed for defaulting on loan payments will walk free thanks to a hefty donation from an Emirati businessman. Ahmed bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, donated Dh506,053 for people jailed for debt, according to the Dubai Police. Brigadier Marwan Abdulkareem, acting head of Correctional and Punitive Institutions, praised Sulayem for his contribution. The official hoped that the donation will inspire more people and give prisoners in debt a second chance. Last November, Indian jewellery mogul Firoz Merchant of Pure Gold Group donated Dh1 million to pay the debt of 700 inmates in the UAE.
