An Emirati man who fell to his death from a mountain in Ras Al Khaimah has been identified as Salem Ahmed Al Haimer Al Shmeili. Al Shmeili, 36, had gone to the mountains on a solo picnic trip, said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Al Mazyoud, Head of Al Rams Comprehensive Police Station. Al Shmeili's family alerted police that he was missing when he did not come home after his trip on Saturday (May 6), hours after he left on his own at 4pm. Search teams were sent out to find the Emirati trekker. His body was found on Sunday (May 7) at the base of a mountainous area. He reportedly fell from a height of around 60 meters. Al Shmeili’s friends told Gulf Today newspaper that he went on his usual trip to search for honey in the mountains. The Emirati was also known for foraging for herbs and searching for mud for his pottery projects. He was reportedly an experienced mountain climber and had been going on expeditions since he was a child. Al Shmeili was also active in search and rescue missions for lost or injured hikers. Al Shmeili, who was a government employee, is survived by his three sons. The family hails from Shamal town in Ras Al Khaimah.
