Camel-milking contest in Abu Dhabi carries Dh300,000 prize

  About 300 camels from the UAE and other Gulf countries participated in a camel-milking contest in Abu Dhabi that carried a top prize of Dh300,000. The six-day contest, which ended on Tuesday (March 8), aims to preserve and commemorate Emirati heritage. Yaslam Al Seiari, a 65-year-old participant of the contest, said that “this is a tradition .” “The late Sheikh Zayed, may he rest in peace and may his children long live, said: Camels are a graceful gift to us. Don't be complacent,” Yaslam Al Seiari, a 65-year-old participant said. Mohsin Al Menhali, another participant expressed how they love the competition. “We love this competition despite that the prizes were little,” Al Menhali said. For 20 years, Al Menhali's father and his older brothers competed in milking competitions. Al Menhali continued the tradition as he grew older. “In childhood, I used to accompany my father. He trained me since I was a child. We have inherited this tradition from our forefathers, since 500 or 1,000 years ago,” Menhali recalled. Menhali also shared the benefits of camel milk saying that “it is nutritious and is a substitute for food and water. If a person falls ill, milk was given as a boosting nutrient.” During the competition, the camels are milked twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The milk is weighed and recorded daily in front of the organizing committee. The camel with the highest yield is the winner. The winner of each of the three categories will receive a prize of Dh300,000 at the conclusion of the milking competition.
