Emirati influencer Salama Mohamed has fired back at online critics who labeled her family’s decision to put up a Christmas tree at home as “haram,” or forbidden, under Islamic teachings. The criticism erupted after Salama shared an Instagram Story explaining her motivations, which she rooted in family values and tolerance. “We personally don’t celebrate Xmas obviously,” she wrote, “but we decorate a whole tree for my beautiful Christian family lives with us at home. Me and my boys wanted to surprise and give them a little bit of their home.” The popular influencer also expressed her dismay at the backlash, stating, “If you really feel offended that me and my boys celebrate others (we have three Christian, brave, and strong women living in our household), then we wish you nothing but healing. We truly believe in tolerance through and through.” Her post has drawn a mixed reaction online. While some netizens accused her of acting contrary to Islamic principles, others praised her for embracing tolerance. One detractor wrote, “Absolutely haram. There is no other excuse. Influencers anything for views.” Supporters, however, lauded her kindness and inclusivity. “You are sending out such an important message about celebrating and accepting every religion and their holidays,” commented a follower named Tannyka. Another supporter, Sheikh Tareeq, added, “Your kindness and respect for others’ traditions is truly admirable.” The UAE has long been celebrated for its policies on religious tolerance. The country allows the practice of different faiths and encourages harmonious coexistence between its multicultural population. In a society where nearly 200 nationalities reside together, Salama’s actions exemplify a personal commitment to UAE’s broader ethos of inclusion. “Happy holidays to all my non-Muslim friends,” she concluded, “Wishing you beautiful holidays in advance!” ICA/Expat Media
