Emirati who killed her own baby appeals for acquittal

  DUBAI – An Emirati woman convicted of killing her 14-month-old baby and whom doctors said put a screw on the baby’s head has challenged the court ruling with an appeal for acquittal. The woman was sentenced to three years in jail in May for deliberately stepping on her baby and causing him internal bleeding that led to his death. The Emirati maintained a not guilty plea when she appeared before the Appeal Court on Sunday. Her lawyer also asked the court to allow Dubai Health Authority experts to reexamine the baby’s medical reports. Her lawyer argued that the baby was admitted to the hospital more than three times in 2015, saying that prescribed medication could have caused side effects on the baby’s intestines. “We also suspect that some sort of negligence or malpractice had happened at the hospital where the boy was admitted for a broken leg in September 2015. The parents were asked to discharge their son after 25 days of treatment, and when asked why, the doctor said because the medication was not covered by the insurance. Due to his continuous crying, the boy was rushed back to hospital after three days before doctors surprised my client and told her that she had put a screw in her son’s skull… yet the boy’s head did not bear any marks or injuries confirming the doctor’s allegation,” the lawyer told the court. According to the primary judgement, the Emirati had repeatedly beat her son until he died in July, 2016. Her sister testified that she saw bruises and injuries on the baby’s body and constantly heard him crying all night. The Emirati’s Indonesian housemaid also testified that that woman was “abusive” towards her son. In court, the Emirati blamed the hospital for her son’s injuries. The court is expected to issue a verdict in September.
