A tragic car accident that cost an Emirati man his leg has become the cornerstone of a new road safety campaign by Dubai Police, warning motorists against reckless driving and speeding. In a heartfelt video, 26-year-old Ahmad Al Raisi shared the devastating consequences of the car crash that occurred on November 3, 2020. He recalled being in the passenger seat when his brother, who was driving over 140 km/h, lost control of the car. It veered off the road and hit an iron barrier, which penetrated the vehicle and severed Al Raisi’s leg. The crash occurred on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and left Al Raisi trapped in the vehicle for two hours before rescuers could extract him from the wreck. He suffered multiple fractures, with his left hand being the only unaffected part of his body. When he woke up in the hospital and realized his leg had been amputated, it was a devastating blow. But his family’s support helped him through rehabilitation. Today, he has returned to university to continue his Electrical Electronics Engineering studies and uses his platform to share stories of accident survivors through his podcast. The video is part of Dubai Police’s awareness campaign, "Together, towards zero traffic fatalities," aimed at curbing dangerous driving behavior. Al Raisi hopes his story will serve as a stark reminder to drivers to prioritize safety. “My only hope is that there will be zero fatalities from road accidents in the future,” he said. Dubai Police is urging the public to take responsibility on the roads, avoid speeding, and follow traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies like Al Raisi’s. ICA/Expat Media
