36-year-old thrower Abdullah Hayayei was hit by a metal pole, according to London police
LONDON – An UAE athlete died after being injured while training at the Newham Leisure Centre yesterday (Tuesday) for the World Para Athletics Championships that start this Friday at the London Olympic Stadium.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) gave no details about the cause of death of 36-year-old thrower Abdullah Hayayei but London Metropolitan Police said initial results of their investigation showed that Hayayei was struck by a metal pole and died.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said, "it is believed the man was struck by a metal pole which formed part of training facilities at the centre."
Hayayei was set to compete at the shot put, discus and javelin throw events in the F34, a category for seated throws by athletes with conditions such as cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury.
The IPC said in a statement that "emergency services were called shortly after 17:00 (5 p.m.) to reports of a seriously injured man. At 17:20 the athlete was pronounced dead at the scene."
The IPC also said the Hayayei's family in the UAE has been informed about his demise.
Hayayei 's maiden Olympic appearance was at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games where he finished sixth in the javelin and seventh in shot put in the F34 class.
Meanwhile, IPC president Philip Craven said in a statement: "We are all truly devastated by this tragic news and the passing of Abdullah. The thoughts, prayers and condolences of the whole Paralympic Movement are with Abdullah's family, friends and teammates as well as the whole of the National Paralympic Committee of the UAE. We are all in state of shock at this terrible tragedy."
