In a remarkable blend of cultures, Alia AlRasheed has made history as the first Emirati certified Ikebana instructor in Dubai. Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arrangement, emphasizes simplicity, asymmetry, and the use of seasonal materials to create balance and beauty. For AlRasheed, this art form is more than just arranging flowers—it’s a path to mindfulness and connection with nature. AlRasheed’s journey began in 2017 when she enrolled in the Ohara School of Ikebana’s UAE chapter, led by Harue Ohki. After years of dedicated study, AlRasheed earned her certification in 2024, joining the small yet growing community of Ikebana practitioners in the UAE. The art of Ikebana, often referred to as "the way of the flower," dates back over 600 years and is renowned for its distinct aesthetic that focuses on negative space, form, and the harmony of natural elements. AlRasheed’s fascination with the craft deepened when she had the opportunity to contribute to the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, where she created arrangements for the VIP entrance and rooms. Recently, AlRasheed's achievement was celebrated by Japan’s Consul General in Dubai, HJun Imanishi, who hosted a special Ikebana workshop at his official residence on October 21. AlRasheed guided 16 members of Zayed University’s Japan Club through the principles of Ikebana. Imanishi, also a certified Ikebana instructor, praised AlRasheed for her role in fostering cross-cultural appreciation. Reflecting on her journey, AlRasheed explained, “What captivates me about Ikebana is its focus on simplicity and seasonality. Each arrangement is a form of self-expression, embodying balance and tranquility. Through this art, I’ve discovered more about Japanese culture, and I’m eager to continue this exploration.” AlRasheed has further ambitions. With Japan hosting Expo 2025 in Osaka, she looks forward to deepening her understanding of the country’s culture and continuing to promote Ikebana in the UAE. The Ohara School of Ikebana, where AlRasheed honed her skills, has a rich history. Established in the late 19th century by Unshin Ohara, the school is known for its distinct Moribana style, which involves shallow, wide containers. Today, it has more than 300,000 members worldwide, with a growing community in the UAE. ICA/Expat Media
