Emirati wins appeal in Filipina rape case

  DUBAI – A 26-year-old Emirati man has been acquitted of raping a 33-year-old Filipina housemaid in his villa. The Emirati on Sunday (August 7) won an appeal against the Dubai court’s ruling in May when he was sentenced to two years in jail for threatening to kill the woman and pushing her into a tent in the villa where he took advantage of her. In his appeal, the Emirati said that the Filipina had lied about the rape. On Sunday, the court overturned the two-year imprisonment and acquitted the suspect for lack of corroborated evidence. The maid had testified that the incident happened while she was hanging out the laundry. “I tried to free myself, but he was stronger and did not let me go. He threatened to kill me… then he kissed me. I could not push him away because he had overpowered me. He had forced sex with me. When he finished and let go of me, I cried,” the woman had told the court. She reported the incident to the Philippine Consulate-General in Dubai, where officials instructed her to leave the villa immediately and head to the consulate. After seeking help with the consulate, she was taken to a police station to file a complaint. A Filipina maid working in the same villa testified that she spotted the Emirati twisting the woman’s arm and forcing her into the tent. She said she only knew about her co-worker’s plight after she saw her crying in the tent and told her what happened to her. The ruling can be appealed for a final time within 30 days.
