Employees at Dubai building warned of fines for smoking

Employees at an office building in Downtown Dubai have been warned of fines for illegal smoking in the premises. The warning came from one of the business centers in Boulevard Plaza, saying that the real estate developer has sent a reminder to all occupants to only use the dedicated smoking area. “As we have received a few complaints from Emaar regarding the cigarette butts in the parking lot, we request you to kindly refrain from using the area and use the designated area on the ground floor,” according to the email notice, warning that “going ahead, fines could be implemented”. The office also warned that smoking cigarettes or vaping inside offices is “strictly prohibited”. Under the UAE law, smoking is prohibited in closed public spaces, including offices, houses of worships, malls, hotels, schools, health facilities, public transport and sports facilities. Smoking is also banned in parks, beaches and all public recreational areas. The law extends to e-cigarettes, shisha and other tobacco products. The fine for offenders ranges from Dh200 to Dh5,000. In malls, smokers can be fined up to Dh2,000 and repeat offenders may be referred to police by mall security officers. Smoking in cars or other enclosed areas in the presence of children is punishable with a fine of not less than Dh5,000. The UAE bans selling tobacco products to those below the age of 18, and will impose up to Dh10,000 fine on violators. The law also covers littering, and those caught throwing cigarette butts on the road or public areas will be fined Dh1,000. The UAE has banned direct or indirect promotion and advertising of tobacco products, and the import of tobacco without proper health warnings in their packaging.
