Employing Indonesian housemaids in UAE now costlier
DUBAI – Employing Indonesian housemaids in the UAE is now costlier following the embassy's implementation of a new criteria in attesting job contracts.
The new criteria includes increased minimum wages based on the housemaid's years of experience.
The Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi said it will not attest job contracts of Indonesian housemaids working in the UAE if the criteria is not met.
Husin Bagis, Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, said the move is part of the Indonesian government's efforts to improve the living conditions of its citizens.
There are 102,000 Indonesians living in the UAE, many of whom are working as housemaids, Bagis said.
Indonesian housemaids with two to four years' experience will now get a minimum wage of Dh1,400 ($378) per month. Those with 20 or more years of experience will get a minimum wage of Dh3,200 ($864), the embassy said in a circular.
Minimum wages as per experience
2 to 4 years — Dh1,400
4 to 6 years — Dh1,600
6 to 8 years — Dh1,800
8 to 10 years — Dh2,000
10 to 12 years — Dh2,200
12 to 14 years — Dh2,400
14 to 16 years — Dh2,600
16 to 18 years — Dh2,800
18 to 20 years — Dh3,000
20 years and above — Dh3,200
The increased wages apply to Indonesians currently working in the UAE as recruitment of new Indonesian housemaids in the UAE has been on hold since 2015.
Indonesia and the UAE are reportedly negotiating a memorandum of understanding on the matter before recruitment resumes.
Under UAE law, the Indonesian embassy's attestation is not mandatory to renew a housemaid's job contract, however, when the housemaid goes back home and wants to come back to the UAE, they will not be allowed to leave the country without an attested job contract.
