Engineer, worker lied about Dubai Expo 2020 fire: Dubai Police

  DUBAI – An engineer and a construction worker had lied about the cause of a fire at the Expo 2020 site in Dubai in May, according to Dubai Police on Friday (June 19). Fire had broken out at the basement of an under-construction site in the area on May 11. Police have since launched an investigation to find out what caused the blaze. On Friday, police said that a team of experts have re-enacted the scene and conducted experiments that revealed the blaze was caused by welding work in the area. A construction worker and an engineer had denied performing any welding work on the day of the incident to evade responsibility. Major General Ahmad Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police, said the welding work increased the temperature inside the tube, which sparked the fire. Al Mansouri said the construction worker was negligent when he welded two pipes and later skipped safety procedures when he returned the equipment back to the storeroom. “Based on the results, the fire started from inside the pipe and was caused by welding work, which the worker confirmed later on," Al Mansouri said. In a statement, police said that the worker had informed the engineer about the technical fault but was told to keep it a secret. “The engineer asked him not to inform anyone of the defect, because there was no witness to his welding process, and therefore there is no need to involve himself and the company in the fire incident,” police said.
