Abu Dhabi-based carrier describes airline's move as 'anti-competitive'

  ABU DHABI - Etihad Airways has criticized American Airlines for prematurely terminating their codeshare agreement that was supposed to end in March next year because of an ongoing conflict over alleged subsidies given to Etihad and two other Middle East carriers by their respective countries. The three airlines have long denied the accusation. American Airlines said on Wednesday it was ending its codeshare agreements with Etihad and Qatar Airways over the alleged subsidies. The codeshare agreement was inked in 2009 and was supposed to run until March 25, 2018. In a statement, Etihad said: "We view the decision by American Airlines as being anti-competitive and anti-consumer. This action will reduce choices for consumers and may result in higher fares for travellers to and from the United States." "Etihad Airways and many of the leading consumer and business groups in the United States have categorically rejected the allegations of American and the two other dominant US carriers regarding violations of the relevant air transportation agreements," the airline also said. American Airlines, Delta and United have long accused Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways of receiving US$42 billion in subsidies from their home countries and asked the US government to revoke the "open skies'' agreement with the three Gulf carriers because the subsidies violate the deal. Meanwhile, Etihad said its six daily flights to the US do not, in any way, threaten American Airlines, pointing out that the latter operates 6,700 flights to 350 destinations in 50 countries with its regional partner American Eagle.
