The European Commission is considering changes to its visa system that could allow certain professionals from outside the EU to stay longer than the current 90 days within a 180-day period. The move forms part of a broader review aimed at simplifying visa processes and attracting skilled workers to support economic growth across member states. Under the proposal, six categories of professionals may benefit from extended stays. These include touring artists, athletes participating in competitions, specialists working on cross-border projects, personnel supporting EU industries and services and truck drivers servicing EU enterprises. The Commission also urged EU countries to make visa access “simpler and faster” for skilled professionals. The initiative seeks to balance smoother mobility with economic needs. Officials believe facilitating longer stays for certain workers can strengthen industries such as culture, sports, logistics and specialised services. If approved, the reforms could provide more flexibility for professionals who frequently travel to the EU for work but are currently limited by the 90/180-day rule under the Schengen visa system. Further discussions among EU member states are expected before any final decision is implemented.
