A European man has been fined Dh20,000 for raising the middle finger at a woman while they were both driving their vehicle in the Al Barsha area. The Dubai Misdemeanor Court found the man guilty of committing an indecent act. Under the UAE law, flashing the middle finger is considered an “indecent gesture in public and a crime related to breaching a victim’s pride, privacy and modesty.” According to court records, the incident between the man and the Gulf woman happened last August while she was driving her car near Mall of the Emirates. In her statement, the woman said that she had swerved her car to reach a nearby petrol station after noticing that her car had run out of fuel. She was surprised to see another car chasing after her and honking its horn continuously. She then saw the driver raising his middle finger at her and making obscene gestures. She reported the incident to the police, who summoned the European driver for questioning. During interrogation, he admitted to making an obscene gesture at the woman, saying he was angry that she swerved abruptly that could have caused her to crash into his rented car. ICA/Expat Media
