Ex-Dubai OFW’s baby left in Libya reunited with mother

DUBAI – A baby girl who was separated from her mother a few minutes after being born in Libya has been reunited with her mother, according to the Philippine Embassy in Libya. Libya Chargé d’Affaires Elmer Cato said the baby’s mother was an undocumented worker who first worked for her employer in Dubai before they moved to Libya. Cato said the mother was not aware she was pregnant when she left the Philippines to work abroad to pay for her husband’s hospital bills after he died late last year. Baby Sarah Gabrielle Felisa was born at the home of her mother’s employer in February 19 before they were taken to the hospital for treatment. “The next day, they were separated after the employer took the mother home but not the baby. The employer did not want the baby in her household,” Cato said in a social media post on Saturday (May 16). Cato said the baby, who was recently baptized at the Philippine Embassy, was only three days old when she was taken into custody by the embassy. “She was separated from her mother shortly after birth and there was no one here to look after her. That is how she became the youngest distressed Filipino we have ever assisted,” Cato said in his post. The diplomat and other embassy staff stood as the baby’s godparents during her christening at the embassy amid coronavirus restrictions in Libya. Cato said the embassy had negotiated for the mother’s release from her employer and that she is now also under the care of the embassy. The diplomat said the mother and daughter will be repatriated once travel restrictions are eased. There are an estimated 2,300 Filipinos in Libya where mandatory repatriation of Filipinos is ongoing due to the civil war.
