Philippine president also tags a mayor to illegal drugs

  MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte has named former Iligan City congressman Vicente Belmonte and former city mayor Lawrence Cruz to the illegal drug trade. Duterte said the names of the two erstwhile city officials were in the list of narcopoliticians drawn up by police and other government sources. Duterte also said a certain Mayor Willy Lim is involved in the illicit business. He did not say from what city Lim was. The President made the accusations in a speech during the conferment of Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas in Malacanang but did not present evidence to back up his claim. Duterte reiterated that his administration will not stop its operations against illegal drugs in the country as he claimed that the Philippines is now a narcostate as shown by the involvement of local and national officials in the drug trade. The President's his opponents and other countries as well as international organizations have strongly criticized the drug war where a 6,000 people have been killed so far in police operations and by vigilantes. The local opposition has lamented that the drug war has targeted the poor and the innocent in many cases.
