800 policemen from 50 countries expected to participate in sports event

  ABU DHABI – The second USIP World Games will be held in Abu Dhabi in November 3-10 to be participated in by more than 800 policemen from 51 nations. The USIP is the official World Police Sport Union and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It was founded in May 1990 in Paris, France by 43 countries that include the UAE. According to the USIP's website, one of the tasks of the USIP is to promote and encourage sports within all police forces on all continents of the world. The World Police Championships feature the following disciplines: athletics (cross-country, marathon, triathlon etc.), judo, cycling, shooting, team and other police related sports. The torch-lighting ceremony was held in the country's capital on Sunday and was attended by Lt. Gen. Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Interior. Also present were Ahmad Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, president of the International Police Union, Lt. Gen. Saif Abdullah Al Shafar, undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Maj. Gen. Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, assistant undersecretary for Naturalisation, Residency Affairs at the ministry, Maj. Gen. Salim Mubarak Al Shamsi, undersecretary of the Interior Ministry for Resources and Supportive Services, Maj. Gen. Ahmad Nasser Al Raisi, inspector general of the Ministry of Interior, Maj. Gen. Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Dubai, and Brig. Gen. Saif Al Ziri Al Shamsi. Al Shafar said that after the UAE was nominated to host the World Police Games, the ministry worked through its committees specialized in providing all facilities necessary along with modern technology, finest stadia with international specifications and a website for the championship to ease the registration process. He emphasized that the ministry is keen on organizing a world championship according to international standards, in which athletes from all over the world can compete, develop relations, share experiences and improve abilities. The athletes will compete in tactical shooting, swimming, judo and jiu-jitsu, according to Al Shafar. Meanwhile, Brigadier Waleed Salem Al Shamsi, chairman of the organizing committee expressed confidence that the event will be a success.
