Ex-PNP chief calls for tougher penalties for OFW employers who skip insurance

  MANILA – Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the UAE and around the world were told to report employers and recruiters who do not offer them insurance. Former Philippine National Police chief Guillermo made the call to OFWs while pushing for tougher penalties for employers and recruiters who skip mandatory insurance for their employees. Eleazar, who is running for a seat in the Senate in the May 9 polls, said that stiffer penalties must be imposed on violating employers and recruitment agencies. The retired police general encouraged Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to report to authorities and concerned agencies if ever their employers will not offer them insurance. The Philippines requires mandatory insurance for agency-hired or directly hired Filipino workers, as well as returning OFWs. “The government should focus on enforcing this regulation because it intends to benefit our migrant workers and their families," Eleazar said in Filipino. According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, recruitment and manning agencies as well as employers who will not provide the mandatory insurance will be blacklisted. The insurance coverage must cover the duration of the employment contract and assures coverage in case of death, disability, repatriation, medical emergency, and litigation.
