Ex-Thai PM sued over rice scheme flees to Dubai, says source

  BANGKOK – Former Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who is charged over an irregular rice subsidy scheme, had fled to Dubai, according to a CNN source. The source, who belongs to Shinawatra's Pheu Thai political party, told CNN that the deposed prime minister is "safe and sound" in Dubai. She left on Wednesday – two days before a verdict on the case filed against her over a rice purchase scheme was set to be read. Shinawatra failed appear before the Thai Supreme Court on Friday for the reading of the verdict. Her lawyer claimed that she was sick but did not produce a medical certificate, prompting the High Court to order Shinawatra's arrest. Yingluck's brother, Thaksin – also a former Thai prime minister - reportedly lives in Dubai and London in self-imposed exile to avoid corruption charges in Thailand. Police General Sriwara Rangsibhramakul told CNN they have no record of Yingluck leaving the country through the airport. When asked if it was possible that she crossed the border and flew to another country from there, Rangsibhramakul replied, "That is possible." Yingluck was ousted by a military coup in 2014 and had been barred from leaving Thailand without court approval since 2015 when her trial began. Yingluck vowed last year to see through her trial and said that she had not considered leaving the country but now that she has fled Thailand, her bail of 30 million baht (US$900,000) that she posted in 2015 has been confiscated. Ms. Shinawatra faced up to 10 years in prison for alleged negligence over a rice purchase program that cost Thailand billions of dollars. The program, which was introduced in 2011, pledged to pay farmers well above the market rate for their crop. But opponents claimed that the government wasted large sums of public funds in the scheme because Thailand couldn't sell the huge stockpiles of rice without losing money and that the scheme had also hurt rice exports. Yingluck however said the rice subsidy scheme benefitted the farmers and the country and called claims that the government lost money as erroneous and motivated by political bias against her.
