Investigations to be conducted into death of Hernandez who was found hanged inside his jail cell

  SHIRLEY, Massachusetts – Disgraced American football player Aaron Hernandez was found hanged inside his prison cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts before dawn yesterday. The 27-year-old Hernandez appeared to have committed suicide. Prison guards found Hernandez at 3:05 a.m. with a bedsheet around his neck and the other end was tied to the window in his cell. The guards tried to revive Hernandez but after failing to do so, they rushed him to a nearby hospital where Hernandez was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m., the Massachusetts Department of Correction said in a statement. Hernandez killed himself just a few days after he was acquitted of double murder by a federal court. Lawyer Jose Baez will look into Hernandez's death for Aaron's family. In a statement, Baez said "the family and legal team is shocked and surprised at the news of Aaron's death. There were no conversations or correspondence from Aaron to his family or legal team that would have indicated anything like this was possible." The former New England Patriots player was charged for the killing of his friend and semipro football player Odin Lloyd in an industrial park in 2013. Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder two years after. Lloyd was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée. The corrections department statement said Hernandez was alone in his cell in the general population wing of the penitentiary and had "attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items." Aside from Baez, the Massachusetts State Police are also investigating Hernandez's death. An autopsy will be done on Hernandez by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death, according to a statement by the Worcester County district attorney's office. Hernandez's death came as a shock as he was acquitted of double murder just last Friday.
