Expat wins Dh500,000 after Dh35 spend in draw

  DUBAI – A Pakistani expatriate who spent Dh35 for an entry to a draw in the UAE and won Dh500,000 thought it was a prank. Muhammad Khalid, 36, was one of two winners who shared the Dh1 million prize in Emirates Loto after matching five out of six numbers in the draw. They split the prize at Dh500,000 each. "At first I thought it was a prank. It was only when I checked the app that I realized it to be true,” the engineer said. The expat, who has lived in the UAE for eight years, said he has never won anything in his life up until now. "I feel so alive, especially as the current situation is stressful for most, with a general sense of worry for the future and family wellbeing. It is a relief to have gained such an amount of financial help during such a critical global situation," he said. “But Emirates Loto has such a low price of entry into the draw and everyone should try their luck,” he added. Khalid said he will use part of his winnings to support some charities. The second winner to share the Dh1 million prize was Rojeh Alfreh, 35, from Syria. Alfreh said he couldn’t believe that he won the money, the second biggest purse after the grand prize of Dh50 million. “I have never won a draw before in my life,” said the Syrian expat who has lived in the UAE since 2007. "It feels great to have won - it's a life changer," he said. He plans to use part of his winnings to “support those in need”. The Syrian admitted he didn’t think there was a chance of winning these types of draws, but tried his luck anyway. His advice to people? “You never know when your lucky day will come. Just hope for good and good will come to you,” he said. Emirates Loto is the UAE’s first fatwa-approved “collectibles scheme”, with weekly draws held every Saturday. To win the jackpot, entrants need to match all six drawn numbers. The Emirates Loto jackpot is fixed at a minimum of Dh35 million for each draw. If there is no winner, then the jackpot will increase by Dh5 million each week until there is a winner or the jackpot reaches Dh50 million. Currently, the jackpot stands at Dh50 million.
