Expat stuck in India worries for elderly mother in Ajman, father in jail

DUBAI – An Indian expatriate who has been unable to return to the UAE for more than three months is hoping to get UAE government approval so she can be reunited with her family here. Mary C. (full name withheld), 26, told Expatmedia.net that she has exhausted all efforts to return to the UAE to be reunited with her elderly mother in Ajman. Mary is currently stuck in New Delhi after she flew there on March 13 to visit her father-in-law at the hospital. “I was supposed to travel back on the evening of March 19, but the travel restriction to UAE was imposed that morning,” she said. Mary said she worries for her 62-year-old mother who is living in Ajman with her younger brother after their 65-year-old father was sent to jail in Dubai this year. “Due to a loan case my father is in Al Aweer prison,” she said, adding that she wants to visit him to check on his condition. Mary, who says she is the breadwinner in the family, also expressed fears of losing her job because of her long absence from work. “It has been months since I haven’t returned to work,” said Mary, who is a customs clearance agent for a courier company in the UAE. “I am worried that if I do not return it might affect my job as I am the only one supporting the family,” she said. Mary said her application through the  Twajudi service was rejected. She is hoping she could reapply her case but it is not an easy task, with reports of long waits and rejections. “I don’t know what else to do,” she said. Hundreds of expatriates like Mary are stranded in the Philippines, India, Pakistan and elsewhere due to travel restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic. Many have sent distress messages to Expat Media and its Facebook page to report that their application was either rejected or still pending after months. Indian teen Vishv Gupta, who returned to Dubai from the US in May, said he applied five times for ICA approval to return to the country before he received clearance to travel back to Dubai on a special flight from Chicago.
