Inset: The pots of marijuana plants found in an apartment in Sharjah. SHARJAH POLICE
A group of Asian expatriates were arrested in Sharjah where they were found to have secretly grown marijuana plants in their apartment. The crime was uncovered after a maintenance worker inspecting air conditioning units in the building noticed the plants and alerted the police. A police team raided the apartment and found a “fully equipped tent nursery” with six pots of the narcotic plants and tools to cultivate them. The suspects were charged with growing illegal narcotic plants and their case was referred to the Sharjah Public Prosecution, which launched an investigation. The group now faces a trial. Under the UAE law, drug trafficking and cultivating narcotic plants are serious crimes with a maximum punishment of death penalty.
