Carrying pots and pans, expats flood Dubai street for unique New Year revelry

DUBAI – Dubai’s Al Rigga Street turned into a flood of people as huge crowds gathered on the street to usher in the New Year. The crowd, made up of mostly Filipino expatriates, turned out in droves, making noises with the pots, pans and other objects they were carrying as they celebrated the New Year. In the Philippines, it is a tradition to greet the New Year with loud noises and plenty of merrymaking to bring in good luck. Revelers also turned up for the impromptu street party wearing Santa hats, carrying balloons, taking endless selfies, dancing or spraying passing vehicles owned by Filipino motorists with foam. It is the first time in recent memory that residents saw street revelry of this magnitude. Dubai-based commercial film director Raymund Salas managed to capture the merrymaking in a video.
