Having a better lifestyle and getting bigger salaries are among the top reasons why expatriates are moving to the UAE, according to an HSBC survey. About four out of ten (36 percent) of the poll participants claimed they moved to the emirates in search of a better quality of life and higher monthly salaries. In comparison to other global markets studied, this proportion is larger. The stability for families and the sustainability of the environment were also given top marks for the UAE. The 2023 survey involved more than 7,000 adults in the UAE, UK, US, Hong Kong, Australia, China, India, Singapore, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The survey aimed to find out how expats' financial situations have changed since the pandemic, their reasons for migrating overseas, and the challenges they encounter once they have settled there. The findings underscored the "attractiveness" of the UAE as a location for those wishing to move abroad, said Daniel Robinson, Head of Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC UAE. “While moving anywhere internationally can be a challenge logistically, financially and personally, we see the UAE so highly rated among the categories that matter most to expats," Robinson said. According to estimates from Global Media Insight, there are about nine million expats living in the UAE. In an effort to entice more enterprises and talent, the UAE government has launched a number of initiatives, including changes to its visa laws. The golden visa scheme is one of the programs that permits foreigners to relocate to the UAE without needing a local sponsor.
