UK raises terror threat level from 'severe' to 'critical'

  LONDON – The UK raised the terror threat level from "severe" to "critical" on Friday after an explosion on one of the city's Underground trains that injured 29 people. Of the number of those hurt, 19 were brought to hospitals while the other 10 went to hospitals themselves. Authorities said most of injuries were flash burns. British authorities have launched a major manhunt for those involved in the incident which they described as an act of terror. As in previous terror incidents in London, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack and said through its Amaq news agency that it was carried out by a "detachment" from the group. The Islamic State however did not provide evidence to back up their claim. Friday's bombing at the London Tube is just one of the many terror incidents that have hit the country, particularly the British capital, that involved the use of vehicles to run down pedestrians on Westminster and London Bridges and outside the Finsbury Park mosque as well as a stabbing spree at the Borough Market. With the terror threat at a "critical" level - meaning another attack is "imminent", British Prime Minister Theresa May said the public should expect increased police visibility in public areas. "The public will see more armed police on the transport network and on our streets, providing extra protection. This is a proportionate and sensible step which will provide extra reassurance and protection while the investigation progresses. The threat of terrorism that we face is severe but together, by working together, we will defeat them," May said. She urged the people to continue on with their lives but to remain vigilant as well. London Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said investigators were making "excellent progress" in identifying, locating and arresting those responsible while London Mayor assured Londoners that police and security services are being deployed to track down, arrest and bring those responsible to justice. When asked about the Islamic State's claim that it's "detachment" carried out the bombing at the London Tube, Rowley told reporters that it is "routine" for the terror grou to take responsibility for attacks in "these sorts of circumstances," regardless of the group's actual involvement.
