Expo 2020 Dubai: Last family to depart on the final day of world fair

Expo 2020 Dubai closed its doors for the final time on Thursday (March 31), after six historic months that saw millions of visitors, world-class entertainment, and mind-blowing innovations. And the last family to depart the world’s fair got a unique treat: a photo with UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General of Expo 2020 Dubai, Reem Al Hashimy, in front of the mammoth event's futuristic entry portals. Expo 2020 Dubai organizers confirmed the family was the last to depart the world fair, which came to an end after a dazzling night of fireworks and performances, in a statement shared on social media. The night, which saw the Expo banner handed over to Japan, which will host the next world fair in 2025 in Osaka, encapsulated the excitement and accomplishment of a six-month journey that began on October 1, 2021, in Al Wasl Plaza. "Today is not the end of Expo 2020 Dubai, but a new beginning," proclaimed His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, in an audio message broadcast throughout the mega expo. He added in his speech, recalling the Expo 2020 trip, that they have portrayed to the world a different form of inventiveness that touched the hearts and minds of every part of society. “Our sons and daughters have proven their ability to overcome unprecedented difficulties and challenges. And in every moment of this journey, we reflected the values of the UAE — values of affection and hospitality.” Emotions ran high amid the festivities as people bid a fond farewell to the major event that had thrilled them with hundreds of activities, exhibitions, and performances. “I am breaking down in tears. I do not want this to end,” claims Filipino expat Marissa Lisie. Pavilions at the enormous site turned off their lights one by one, signaling the end of the world's greatest exhibition.
