Expo 2020 Dubai says 3 deaths, 72 injuries recorded on site

  DUBAI – Expo 2020 Dubai revealed there have been three deaths on site since construction work began in 2015. “Unfortunately, there have been three work-related fatalities, 72 serious injuries to date,” according to Expo 2020 Dubai in a statement, adding that the injuries ranged from fractured wrists to heat stroke. “We are not complacent. Our Worker Welfare Assurance Standards, which are bound into every contract, set down both UAE law and requirements formulated from international best practice,” according to Expo 2020 Dubai. The accident frequency rate at Expo 2020 stands at 0.03, compared to the UK’s 0.07 in the construction sector. According to Expo 2020, all contractors and third parties must comply with its Assurance Standards, the UAE law, and any other regulations and guidelines by relevant authorities. Contractors are required to develop and implement a weather working plan that details safe work arrangement in various weather conditions. The Workers Welfare Assurance Standards also cover accommodation and sanitary facilities, work hours, rest hours and protection from work hazards and illnesses. “Protecting the welfare of those working to build our site is our top priority.. We are committed to the high standards we have set for ourselves and our contractors and remain firmly focused on working together to continually improve,” according to Expo 2020 Dubai.
