Faced job discrimination in UAE? Official gives advice

  DUBAI - Residents have been urged to report incidents of discriminatory job listings in the UAE following a recent job hiring post by a nursery school group looking for a teacher with "white skin". Dr Omar Al Nuaimi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation said it is against the law to post job advertisements that specifies a person's race, nationality or other "discriminatory preferences". Al Nuaimi said those found flouting the law will be penalised. Under the UAE law, "any form of discrimination, by any means of expression" is punishable by a minimum prison sentence of five years and fines of between Dh500,000 and Dh1 million. He urged residents to report such incidents to the ministry on hotline 80060. Al Nuaimi said the ministry was made aware of a recent case involving Happy Jump Nursery group, which posted and later removed an online advertisement seeking "European origin and white skin" teachers. "These actions are discriminatory on nationality, colour and it is not allowed by UAE or international law. Companies will be punished if they engage in these actions. We will take appropriate moves to address the issue in all such cases," Al Nuaimi told Khaleej Times. Al Nuaimi said companies are investigated when a complaint is raised against them, and is given a warning before the case is referred to the prosecution if the investigation concludes that the company's action was deliberate.
