Scammers have targeted UAE residents anew with a recent round of fake SMS purportedly about a package from Aramex, a UAE-based parcel delivery and logistics company. The fake SMS, which appears to be sent from an overseas number, tells the receiver that their Aramex package has been “stopped from delivery” and urges them to update their address and pay for shipping. Speaking to Expatmedia.net, an Aramex representative said that the company only contacts clients through official channels, and advises anyone who receives such SMS to alert authorities. This is not the first time that scammers have used such a ploy to victimize residents in the UAE. Last month, scammers also posed as Emirates Post to lure victims into clicking on a link to “update your shipping address and reschedule your delivery.” Emirates Post has dismissed the message as fake, saying that it is from scammers posing as representatives of the company. The courier urged residents to be wary of responding to unsolicited messages. “We only send SMS through our Emirates Post registered account,” according to Emirates Post. “Fraud comes in many forms from: email, SMS, WhatsApp messages, and survey with payment links impersonating Emirates Post,” it said, urging residents to report scammers to authorities. Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against responding to unsolicited messages and emails, saying that scammers can use such methods to gain access to their personal and banking details.
