Fake CID officers on trial over Dh1.9m theft at Dubai store

  DUBAI – An eight-member gang posing as CID officers is on trial in Dubai after kidnapping an Indian businessman and stealing Dh1.9 million from his store. At the Dubai Criminal Court, seven of the men pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, robbery and impersonating police. An eighth accused remains at large. The court heard that three Indian men had posed as CID officers when they entered the electronics shop in Naif and asked the owner for his trade licence and shop keys. Four other men waited outside as the shop owner and his assistant were forced into a vehicle driven by one of the gang members who took the duo to International City. After arriving at the residential neighbourhood, the shop owner and his assistant were told to get out of the vehicle. Suspecting that something was off, the shop owner called his business partner to check on the store. It had been ransacked and that the robbers had taken Dh1.9 million from the safe. After receiving an alert, Dubai police were able to track down seven of the suspects and recover some of the cash. “Around Dh70,000 of the stolen cash was recovered in Sharjah, where one of the defendants kept it,” a policeman testified. “Another Dh27,000 was found on one of the defendants at the time of his arrest,” the policeman added.
