164,000 counterfeit items seized in Abu Dhabi crackdown on fake goods trade
ABU DHABI - Businesses in Abu Dhabi that sell fake products face heavy fines and may be ordered to shut down, authorities said following a recent crackdown on fake goods trade in the emirate.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) said it will also introduce a number of measures and penalties to crack down on counterfeit goods traders.
Mohammed Munif Al Mansouri, acting executive director of Abu Dhabi business center, said penalties may even include closure of any establishment that is involved in the commercial fraud.
He issued this comment in the recent joint raids carried out by the Added in cooperation with the municipalities of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, Abu Dhabi Police, the Food Control Authority, Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council and the Waste Management Centre.
At least 164,000 counterfeit and fake items were seized during raids in recent months. The items ranged from clothes, shoes, accessories, cosmetics and haircare products to electronics, telephone and mobile phones.
