Fake job website targets UAE jobseekers

  DUBAI – A job website that targets thousands of jobseekers in an elaborate scam appears to be back online with nearly 280,000 fake job listings from the UAE. According to reports, most of the job listings on India-based Wisdom Jobs (https://www.wisdomjobsgulf.com) are fake, outdated or copied from other websites. Some of the job listings are for companies that have already shut down. According to reports, the scam begins after jobseekers upload their CV on the portal and instantly get a phone interview from call centre agents impersonating HR managers. Candidates are then persuaded to pay a so-called resume handling fee of around Dh380 and can end up paying thousands of dirhams in bogus fees. When the racked was exposed earlier this year, police in India arrested 14 members of Wisdom Jobs, including its founder and CEO. Investigation revealed that the portal raked in Dh58 million by scamming 70,000 jobseekers in India and 35,000 others in the UAE and around the world. As of Friday (November 15), however, the website was still online with 273,461 job listings from the UAE. Dubai-based Aspiriti Recruitment Group told media they spotted 517 fake job listings on Wisdom Jobs under their company’s name. The company said it has already asked the website to remove the ads, describing it as a “fraudulent act”. Wisdom Jobs describes itself as the world’s first skill assessment-based portal. It was launched in 2008 by Engineering graduate Ajay Kolla in Hyderabad, India with a start-up capital of Dh200,000. The company claims partnerships with 35,000 “top-notch companies”.
