A fake legal notice purportedly from the UAE Central Bank has resurfaced on WhatsApp amid a renewed attack from scammers. Residents have reported receiving the scam message on WhatsApp, asking them to verify their account details “for security reasons” or risk having their bank account closed. “I instantly noticed it was fake because of the grammatical mistakes and typographical errors, and it is not even addressed specifically to me, if I was really the intended recipient,” a resident told Expatmedia.net. The UAE Central Bank has repeatedly warned UAE residents against responding to such messages, saying that scammers are “very likely to target the vulnerable”. The Central Bank said that scammers use social media, SMS, phone calls, emails and even home visits “all in an attempt to encourage you to provide money or personal information”. “Reject offers of products or services that come from unknown or unverified persons, social media, emails,” the UAE Central Bank advised. “Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, email or text messages. Fraudulent phone calls, e-mails and texts use false identity to cloak their true identity. Do not click on links or open emails from senders you don’t know,” the Central Bank added. ICA/Expat Media
