Fallen Filipino nurses in UAE honoured by Dubai ruler

  DUBAI – Two Filipino nurses who died in service during the Covid-19 pandemic in the UAE were honoured by the Dubai ruler during the Commemoration Day ceremony in Abu Dhabi. Lezly Orine Ocampo and Marlon Jimenea were posthumously honored with the Fallen Frontline Heroes Order by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday (November 30). Sheikh Mohammed also posthumously honoured doctors Muhammad Usman Khan, Ahmed Al Sebaei and Anvar Ali with the Order. He also presented the Order to the families of doctors Sudhir Rambhau Washimkar and Bassam Bernieh at the ceremony. The Dubai ruler also presented the medal of honor to the family members of healthcare workers Ahmed Omar, Ali Alsaadi, Mohamed Alabdouli and Tariq Albaloushi. Watch the video The awards were given following an order from President Sheikh Khalifa to establish a Fallen Frontline Heroes Order for medics who died of Covid-19 while working on the frontlines. Sheikh Mohammed also laid a wreath at the Martyr’s Monument in Wahat Al Karama, followed by a 21-gun salute for the fallen heroes. “We thank Allah Almighty for blessing us with valiant men and women who have lived up to their promises to this nation," Sheikh Mohammed said.

Fallen Filipino Covid-19 frontline heroes in UAE

Ocampo, dubbed the Filipina nightingale nurse of the UAE, was known for her love of music as much as her love of caring for patients. The 32-year-old nurse died on May 12 after catching the virus as she voluntarily extended her work hours at Burjeel Homecare to help tackle the coronavirus outbreak. In April, Filipino nurse Jimenea, 44, died a few days after being admitted to the hospital for Covid-19. Jiminea had worked in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Sharjah where he treated Covid-19 patients when he contracted the virus. He was believed to be the first Filipino frontliner to die of Covid-19 in the UAE.
