Residents traumatized by the fire that hit the skyscraper on Aug. 3 flee building
DUBAI – A technical glitch caused fire alarms at the Torch Tower to go off on Thursday night, triggering panic among residents who are still recovering from the trauma caused by a fire that broke out at the 86-storey skyscraper last August 4.
Reports said the tower's fire alarm went off at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, rousing residents from sleep who immediately got their belongings and scrambled for the fire exits.
Yazen Al Timimi, a Canadian consultant living at the tower's 22nd floor, told The National that the alarm rang for about a minute then it stopped. He then took his belongings and rushed to the stairwell.
He said there was complete chaos.
"After what happened the other week I panicked and took some clothes, money and my passport and ran downstairs. There were families with babies trying to get out. Everything above the 28th floor is still empty. We thought it was the same thing happening again. Everyone was in panic mode, some were barefoot."
Al Timimi said the building's security later told that it was a false alarm. The residents then went back to their units.
