US intelligence officials suspect that Russian hackers planted fake story that triggered dispute, according to a CNN report

  WASHINGTON – The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believe that Russian hackers planted a fake news report in Qatar's national news agency which triggered the diplomatic spat among Arab countries, according to CNN. The American news network said the FBI sent a team to Doha to help Qatar investigate the alleged hacking incident that happened two weeks ago. The US maintains a military base in Qatar. Intelligence reports gathered by the FBI showed that Russian hackers were allegedly behind the intrusion. It was not determined if the hackers worked for Russian security services or for criminal organizations in that country. The FBI and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) however refused to comment on the matter The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain and Egypt had cut relations with Qatar after the news story claimed that Doha has allegedly been supporting, funding and hosting terror groups. The CNN report said the alleged hacking incident have raised concerns by US intelligence and security agencies that like what happened in the US presidential elections last year, Russia is employing the same tactics on American allies. The US had accused Russia of hacking the US presidential campaign in November 2016, affecting in particular the camp of Democratic presidential nominee, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton. CNN cited US officials as saying that Russia is allegedly trying to cause rifts among the US and its allies, mentioning also that fake news reports came out during elections in Germany, France and other nations. Meanwhile, the Qatari government said it is willing to talk to their Middle East and North African neighbors to resolve the dispute. Qatar foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani told CNN's Becky Anderson, "We are willing to sit and talk." Al-Thani also said his country believes in promoting peace in the Middle East. Al-Thani also said his country "is combatting financing of terror groups and doing everything they can to protect the world from terrorists."
