FIFA board unanimously okays expansion of 2026 World Cup format, but World Cup champion Germany opposes increasing number of teams from 32 to 48

ZURICH - The Federacion Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has unanimously approved the expansion of the 2026 World Cup to a 48-nation competition. This means that the 48 countries will be divided into 16 groups of three teams. The change was proposed by Gianni Infantino, president of the 211-member FIFA and was approved by the council on Tuesday. The current 32-nation format will still be implemented in the World Cup 2018 in Russia and the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. In defending his proposal prior to the council meeting, Infantino earlier said: "financially, the 48-team format is the most appealing or successful simply because the sporting element is prevailing and every match is important. The decision should not be financially driven, neither in terms of revenue or costs but the driver should really be the development of football and boosting football all over the world." There will no problem with regard funding an expanded World Cup as the FIFA projects an increase of 20 percent in rights fees from broadcasters and sponsors. With the addition of 16 more teams, a three-group format will be adopted and there will be faster progression to the knockout stages. Each participating country will play against the others in its grouping once and the top two will move on to an enlarged knockout round involving 32 teams. This ensures that each team will have at least matches. Meanwhile, the 2026 World Cup host has not yet been decided but there are reports that countries in North and Central America are interested in being the site of the games.
