Filipina dies in fall from Abu Dhabi building

DUBAI – A Filipina died after falling from the 13th floor of a residential building in Abu Dhabi, according to a report. The family of Mary Jean Alberto in the Philippines suspect foul play, saying that the victim had complained of maltreatment by her employer before the October 2 incident, GMA News “24 Oras” reported on Tuesday (October 15). Authorities are still investigating the case. In a press conference in Manila, Alberto’s son showed the overseas Filipino worker's last distress message that was sent to her sister in Abu Dhabi. In the text message, Alberto pleaded for her sister to rescue her from her employer who “almost choked her” following an allegation. Alberto’s son said that following the text message, they could no longer contact her, and that when he called his mother’s employer, she had informed him that the Filipina had died. Alberto’s son said that prior to the incident, his mother complained that she had not been given food and had been overworked. The Filipina also sent photos showing bruised parts of her body. Meanwhile, human rights group Migrante International has called for an independent investigation into the cause of Alberto’s death.
