Filipina who ‘found’ lost boy in Dubai arrested

  DUBAI – The story of a boy who a Filipina shopper claimed to have found wandering alone in Dubai’s Reef Mall took a different turn when investigation revealed that the shopper was actually the person who abandoned him. The Dubai Police said on Thursday (September 19) that the Filipina who handed over the boy, 5, to the police station on September 7 was actually his custodian. Police said the boy was left to the Filipina by another woman who had been looking after him for the past five years. That woman’s friend is the boy’s biological mother who abandoned him two days after he was born. Police were able to track down the friend of the boy’s mother following a tip-off from a caller who said he knew the boy’s mother and that he had seen the child living with another woman in Sharjah. Brigadier Ali Ghanem, director of Al Muraqqabat Police station where the boy was being cared for by female police officers, said that police have arrested the woman from Sharjah. The woman told police that the boy is his friend’s son and that she had been taking care of him in the last five years. Police did not reveal her identity. She claimed that the child’s mother had left him in her care to attend to an urgent matter in her home country, but that the woman never came back. The woman said she had been unable to contact her friend or her relatives and that she had been taking care of the boy since then. Because of the boy’s growing needs, the woman said she was forced to hand over the boy to the care of the Filipina in Dubai, as suggested by her friend. Unfortunately, the Filipina could not take care of the boy for long and was forced to make up a story about finding him abandoned in the mall after her friend suggested it. Brigadier Ghanem said police have arrested the two women who took care of the boy, and also their two female friends who suggested that they abandon the boy. Police have run a DNA test confirming that none of them were the boy’s mother. The boy is now in the custody of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children.
