2 Filipinos, Indian ‘illegally detained’ in Abu Dhabi rescued

  DUBAI – Two Filipino women and an Indian woman have been rescued from “illegal detention” in Abu Dhabi, according to the Philippine Embassy. The women were working as housemaids in the capital and despite being unhappy with working conditions at their employer’s home, they were allegedly not allowed to leave their workplace. They were rescued from their workplace with the help of Criminal Investigation Department officials and Abu Dhabi police. The trio appeared before the public prosecution in Abu Dhabi on Thursday to issue statements as part of ongoing investigations. The Philippine and Indian embassy officials are coordinating with local authorities for the early repatriation of the women. The Filipino women, from Mindoro and Quezon province, came to the UAE on a tourist visa to work as housemaids, according to embassy officials. Since 2014, the Philippines has stopped processing work permits for Filipino housemaids in the UAE due to conflicting recruitment rules in both countries. However, some people choose to circumvent this rule by coming to the UAE on tourist visa and then seek employment. Meanwhile, the Indian embassy has promised to give consular access to the Indian woman. Authorities said that the woman, in her late 20s, is from Bengaluru.
