Filipina kidney transplant patient in Abu Dhabi saved by ‘angels’
DUBAI – A Filipina who underwent a successful kidney transplant in Abu Dhabi thanked “angels” who helped save her life. Pinky Carbonera, a 37-year-old dental assistant, said she would never have known about her kidney failure had it not been for a couple of unplanned medical tests. The Filipina underwent a medical check-up in October 2013 after having very high blood pressure. Her tests diagnosed kidney dysfunction. A second test in 2017, when she went for another unplanned medical check-up after feeling unwell, detected that her kidney was deteriorating. "God sent me angels in many forms since I was diagnosed with kidney failure three years ago until the smooth kidney transplant was done two weeks back," Carbonera told state news agency WAM. Carbonera called her two supportive employers in the last three years, and a cousin who donated her kidney as her “angels sent by God”. She also thanked doctors and staff at Mafraq hospital and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City where she received advanced treatment. Carbonera praised her cousin, Airene Penagunda, for “sacrificing” her kidney so she could live a normal life. "I never imagined that she would be ready for such a sacrifice,” the Filipina said, describing her 33-year-old cousin. Carbonera, a single mother of two children, is grateful for her new lease of life, saying she is glad that she didn’t have the same fate as her father who died in 2013 due to kidney failure. He could not undergo kidney transplant because of the cost of the transplant, said Carbonera, whose own transplant was covered by health insurance in the UAE. "My experience proves that everyone having a family history of any fatal disease should go for a regular check-up. Early diagnosis always helps successful treatment of any serious ailments," said the expat who has been living in the UAE since 2011. Carbonera, who got engaged in Abu Dhabi in October, said she is looking forward to her wedding soon. "God will send you angels in many forms, that is my experience," she said.
